Mumbai: Akshay Kumar-starrer ‘Samrat Prithviraj’ has raked in over Rs 39 crore at the domestic box office in its first weekend, the makers of the film said on Monday (June 6). Directed by Chandraprakash Dwivedi and produced by Yash Raj Films, the historical action drama was released on 3 June in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu.
‘Samrat Prithviraj’, made in a budget of Rs 175 crore, has collected Rs 10.70 crore on the first day. According to a statement released by YRF, on Saturday and Sunday, the film collected Rs 12.60 crore and Rs 16.10 crore at the box office, taking the total business of Rs 39.40 crore in three days. Dwivedi said that he is happy with the response the film is getting.
The film started off a bit slow as it clashed with Kamal Haasan’s Vikram and Adivasi Shesh’s Major at the box office. While ‘Samrat Prithviraj’ has collected a total of Rs 34 crores, ‘Vikram’ has crossed the Rs 150 crore mark worldwide.

Filmmaker Lokesh Kanagaraj’s action thriller ‘Vikram’ marks the much-awaited return of veteran star Kamal Haasan to the silver screen. ‘Vikram’ follows a black ops cop who goes after a mysterious gang of masked men following a series of murders of a police officer. The masked men have declared war on the system. Haasan plays the role of Amar, who is assigned to investigate the serial killings. The film also stars Vijay Sethupathi and Fahadh Faasil.

Big screen! We tried to create a visual spectacle in line with the valor of the mighty king and I am happy with the film opening at the box office,” the director said in a statement.
The film, earlier titled ‘Prithviraj’, is based on the life of Rajput king Prithviraj Chauhan, played by Kumar. It also stars Miss World 2017 Manushi Chhillar, Sanjay Dutt and Sonu Sood.
Prior to its release, ‘Samrat Prithviraj’ was made tax free in BJP-ruled Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
